Satan's Strategy #3 Deny God & Kill His Followers

Scripture: Acts 7:59-60
And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Observation:
Stephen just gave the council members a history lesson that they couldn't argue with. The problem was when he talked about them personally, they couldn't handle the truth. They actually covered their ears and screamed to block it out. Then they stoned him and while he is dying he is asking the Lord to forgive them. Amazing!!

Application:
I have been in a few situations where I am conversing with someone or studying the Word and for some reason, the person will not accept what is being said to them. The conversation could be that the sky is blue, or in study, it could be clearly written in the Bible. Whatever the reasons the person is unwilling to look at or hear anything that may contradict their ideas or beliefs. They don't want to accept anything that may require them to make a change in their life. The evidence is as clear as the nose on your face, and they still can't see it! It's called DENIAL. When a person refuses to see what is clearly in view, they are in DENIAL. In some cases this is understandable, but in others such as following God, it is not. If we continually deny God and what He is trying to teach us, then He will deny us. I should continue to try and reach people even though others may not like it. Stephen didn't go and just start preaching to these councilmen, he was taken there. Those who persecute me for doing what is right, I should pray for and ask the Lord to forgive them.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, help me always accept Your council. Guide me and help me understand the lessons that You are trying to teach me. Give me the desire to pray for those who persecute me and to love those who hate me. In Jesus Name Amen.

Satan's Strategy #2 - Spin Lies about God and His Followers

Scripture: Acts 6: 10-12
And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.” And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council.

Observation:
Stephen is going around doing good for all the people and telling them about God. Some men decided to dispute what Stephen is saying by lying about him. They go so far as to stir up the people about it and get others to join in their lie and Stephen is taken to the council.

Application:
These verses are telling me that even though I may be doing the right thing, Satan hates me and will do anything to stop me. Even make up lies and try to get me in trouble with the authorities, all because I love God and what to tell others about Him.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for showing me this. Please protect me and all Your workers and help us to finish the work you have for us to do. In Jesus Name Amen.

Suffering for Christ

Scripture: Acts 5: 40-42
And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

Observation:
The disciples are preaching and the officials don't like it. They throw them in prison and an Angel lets them out. They go to the temple to preach some more and when they are discovered, they are taken before the council, beaten and told to stop preaching, then released. Even after being beaten, they rejoiced that they suffered for Jesus and continue to preach to everyone who will hear them.

Application:
There have been times that I have shut my mouth (believe it or not) because I was told that I should not be discussing religious things to the people I happened to be around. I was actually made to feel bad for wanting to spread the good news when an opportunity presented itself! I wonder if that has ever happened to anyone else? After a number of years, I decided I needed to move on and went someplace else. I will say that I did not look with favor upon what I had to put up with, much less praise God for it. These verses have reminded me that I should be thankful when I am having such a hard time sharing the good news because I must be doing something right or Satan wouldn't be trying so hard to stop it.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, help me remember to always be thankful when I have the opportunity of presenting the Gospel to others. When I am hindered or ridiculed by others for doing so, help me to rejoice, remembering to count it a joy to suffer for YOU. In Jesus Name Amen.

God's Word Is Pure

Scripture: Psalm 12:6
The words of the LORD are pure words, Like silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times.

Observation:
This tells me that the words of the Lord are straightforward, clear and accurate.

Application:
I can take God at His word. His word will never change. His word will be a guide for me to follow that will keep me on a pure and upright path.

Prayer:
Dear Lord thank you for you Pure, Unchanging, Holy word. Help me to diligently read and study Your word. In Jesus Name Amen.

TEAMWORK

Scripture: Exodus 17:11-12
And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Observation:
The Israelites are in battle with Amalekites. They only win when Moses has his hands raised. Moses is so tired that he has to have help keeping his hands up. Finally the battle is over and the Israelites have won.

Application:
This took some TEAMWORK. What Moses had to do probably didn't look like that difficult of a job. But after awhile we definitely see that he needed the help. That's the way it is with church work today. We have leaders in place and you may think the job they do is an easy one. But I can tell you, it only looks that way. Leaders get tired, just like Moses did in this instance, and they need the help of a faithful group of people to continue to do the job. God placed Aaron and Hur there with Moses to help him. What if one decided that he just didn't want to do that job because he didn't feel "called"? Well I am sure the Lord would have sent someone else, but He was giving him the opportunity serve, and in serving there is a multitude of blessings. If I skip over an opportunity because I just don't feel like it, or I don't feel called, I could very well be missing out on what God desires me to do. Moses wasn't comfortable in his role. God had him get out of his comfort zone and move in a direction that was new and unfamiliar to him, as a result God used him in miraculous ways. Moses became closer to God through this experience and if I continue to step out in faith in the direction that God asks me, then I will be closer to God also.

Prayer:
Dear Lord thank you for showing me that I should serve when the opportunity presents itself. Help me get out of my comfort zone so that I can grow closer to You. In Jesus Name Amen.

The Lord Provides

Scripture: Exodus 16:4-5
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”

Observation:
The Lord is providing food for the Israelites and He is testing them with the Sabbath preparation to see if they will obey His laws or not.

Application:
How many times have I been tested and not realized it? As Sabbath is approaching do I prepare for the day or do I find that my time is taken up doing other things that I deem important? When that has happened I have discovered that I miss the blessing that the Lord wanted me to have on that day. The Lord wants to spend time with me and I need to make time for Him. He is the most important, not the least important. The things that I "think" need to be done can wait. I have heard the saying, " the Ox is in the ditch" used as an excuse for continuing to be unprepared. Well the question should be asked, "How did the Ox get in the ditch?" Did I place him there or was it an unforeseen occurrence? If I am placing my "Ox in the ditch" because I have delayed preparing until the last minute, then I am breaking God's law. If on the other hand my "Ox is in the Ditch" because of some unexpected occurrence, then I am free to gather whatever I may need to accommodate the situation. There is a good book that I have been reading that helps me take control of Sabbath preparation, it's called, "Oh No, It's Sabbath Again and I'm Not Ready!" by Yara Cerna Young. I highly recommend this book to anyone who may struggle in this area.

Prayer:
Dear Lord forgive me for the times when I have failed the test you have given me. Help me to prioritize my time so that I can be ready for the Sabbath time with You. Help me understand that You will provide everything I need. In Jesus Name Amen.

Following the Lord

Scripture: Exodus 13:21-22
And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.

Observation:
The Lord has finally got Pharaoh to see reason and the children of Israel get to leave Egypt. God is leading the way via a cloud in the day and fire at night. He will not leave them.

Application:
I find it interesting that God is personally taking on this task. He is personally leading them out of Egypt. He isn't using Moses here, It's God. They didn't have to hunt for God. God was right in front of them, all they had to do was look up and follow. How easy the Lord made it for them to follow Him. He makes it easy for me to follow Him too, all I have to do is take my focus off of me and start placing it on Him, then I will be able to see clearly and be able to follow where he leads.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for leading me. Help me keep my focus on You so that I will be able to follow where you lead. In Jesus Name Amen.

Jesus Comforts Me

Scripture: Luke 24:14-16
And they talked together of all these things which had happened. So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

Observation:
The disciples have been told by the women that Jesus has risen. They don't believe it, but several are discussing it as they travel to Jerusalem. As they are walking a stranger joins in the conversation on the road to Jerusalem. They don't realize who it is because Jesus kept it from them. When they arrive at home they sit down to eat, Jesus breaks the bread and blesses it, just as He has always done before, and suddenly they realize who is with them.

Application:
I love this part of the story. It shows me that Jesus could appear as any person that I meet in life. Once in my teen years, I was working and I was having a very bad day..it was awful in fact. It wasn't my job, it was my life that was keeping me upset. Anyway as I was working a stranger came up to me and spoke with me briefly. You know, those few moments made me feel like a new person. It was not a pep talk, it was heart talk. It was an awesome experience. I had never seen that person before or after that event. I always wondered if God had sent an angel to comfort me at that time. Now I wonder if it might not have been Jesus himself. I will never forget it!

Prayer:
Dear Lord thank you for loving me and caring enough to come and comfort me when I needed it most. Help me remember that when I need You, You'll be there. In Jesus Name Amen.

Jesus Died to Save Me

Scripture: Luke 23:46-47
And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit.’” Having said this, He breathed His last. So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”

Observation:
The officials & the people know that Jesus hasn't done anything worthy of death. But they decide he needs to die anyway because he's a trouble maker. They see the veil in the temple torn in two and the sun darkened. Even while Jesus is dying he is still being watched and mocked by many who are there. Finally when he starts to die, he says loudly, "Father, 'into Your hands I commit My spirit.", and someone becomes a believer. It is awesome that even though death comes it can still glorify God.

Application:
Well, I will admit that I don't want to die. I don't know anybody that really wants to. But my kids sometime ask me, "Why does Jesus let people die? He's supposed to love us, so why isn't he protecting us?" Well this is a good example of why some people are allowed to die- so that others may be saved. Sometimes when this is happening it is hard to see why it is allowed. But when a person dies knowing Jesus, having lived a life that represents Him, even in the process of dying they still show that Christ dwells within. I knew a lady who had breast cancer, who died with such a love for Christ that in her last weeks, all she did was glorify God. Whenever you would talk to her, you could tell she wasn't worried because God was in full control. In fact, she comforted us. If I ever have to come face to face with death, I want to be like that, glorifying God. What a witness!

Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for showing me that even through the process of dying you can still work to change the hearts of those who witness this event. Thank you for loving me so much that You were willing to die, so that I would be saved. In Jesus Name Amen.

F.R.O.G. - Fully Rely on God

Scripture: Luke 22:60-62
But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

Observation:
Peter has had the last supper with Jesus where he was told that he would betray Jesus. Peter really didn't think he would do something like that. Then after Jesus arrest, he goes and does exactly what he said he wouldn't do, betrays Jesus 3 times. The rooster crows and suddenly with one look from Jesus, Peter remembers and is so shocked and ashamed at himself he runs away and cries.

Application:
This passage tells me that I should not be overconfident in my own power. I may want to do the right thing, but I have a sinful nature that loves to do what is wrong. When I am in a situation where I must choose right or wrong, I must ask Jesus for help. Every time I choose the wrong path, I hope and pray that the Lord will make me feel shame and sorrow for it, so that I will learn not to do it again.

Prayer:
Dear Lord help me not rely on myself, but to rely on You and Your power. Help me make wise choices. When I err and make a wrong move please humble me and bring me to repentance so that may learn what is right and pleasing to you. Please teach me your ways and keep me on the right path. In Jesus Name Amen.

Watch and Be Ready

Scripture: Luke 21:36
Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Observation:
He is telling the people about the events leading up to his return. He says that we should keep a watchful eye and pray that we will be allowed to escape the calamities that are coming and be able to stand before Jesus.

Application:
How I long for the soon return of Jesus. So many times though I find myself getting wrapped up in the things of this world and I no longer have my mind focused on His return. Then when something major happens in the world - war, earthquakes, etc... It suddenly gets my attention and I focus once again on end time events. Jesus is telling me that I should not be this way. He is telling me to WATCH, PRAY AND BE READY.
If there were a physical war going on in my country and I was told to watch and be ready for certain things to happen in order that I may be saved, I think I would have a hard time losing my focus.
A major war is going on in our world and it is spiritual. If I could see it, I would probably be terrified. Not being able to see it, doesn't mean it's not happening. Jesus gave us signs to look for, to let us know when to act and that the time of His return is near. I should remain ever watchful, prayerful and ready so that I will be saved when He returns.

Prayer:
Dear Lord thank you for your guidance and your love for me. Help me not grow complacent while I wait. Help me to be watching and praying so that I will be ready when you return. In Jesus Name Amen.

God Is With Me Always

Scripture: Genesis 50:19-21
Joseph said to them, “Do not be afraid, for am I in the place of God? But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive. Now therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones.” And he comforted them and spoke kindly to them.

Observation:
Many years have passed and Joseph's brothers become fearful that Joseph will get revenge for what they did to him now that their father has died. Joseph tells them that he isn't God and it's not his job to punish them. Through Joseph's experiences he sees that God was working, and even though he was on a path he didn't choose for himself God certainly intended that good things would come of it. He spoke kindly to his brothers and reassured them that they were forgiven.

Application:
It is hard to see why God allows bad things to happen to His people. This example of God blessing Joseph and the people he worked for, tells me that God is always with me. When I am wronged by someone I need to remember that the situation is not hopeless. I also need to remember that it isn't my job but God's to punish people. I hope I always remember that no matter what my circumstances that God is always with me and seeking good things for me.

Prayer:
Dear Lord thank you for always being with me. Thank you for the good things you given me. Help me to remember that no matter what my circumstances you will take care of me. In Jesus Name Amen.

I Am No Better

Scripture: Luke 19:7
But when they saw it, they all complained, saying, “He has gone to be a guest with a man who is a sinner.”

Observation:
Zacchaeus who is a tax collector has climbed in a tree to see Jesus because he is to short to see Him through the crowd. When Jesus sees him he tells him to come down because He is going to his house. The crowd is not happy. Zacchaeus is a tax collecting thief. What a sinner he is. How can Jesus be around such people?!

Application:
Try thinking of the type of person you don't like being around...thieves, murders, prostitutes etc...These people are sinners, right? Well guess what...I am a sinner too, I just might not be so obvious about it. God does not place a value on sin. It is all the same and it all has the same result...death. So the next time I am tempted to think I am better than someone because of their life choices, I should remember that God knows the heart of each person and I don't.

Prayer:
Dear Lord help me to treat all people the way You would treat them. Help me to look past the sin and appearances. Help me to realize this person is of such great value to you that you were willing to die for them. Help me not to have a better than you attitude. In Jesus Name Amen.

Persistent Prayer

Scripture: Luke 18:1
Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart,..

Observation:
Jesus is telling a parable about a woman who is a constant bother to a man who doesn't believe in God. She wants him to avenge some wrong that has been done to her. He finally decides to do it because she won't leave him alone. God says if the unjust can do it, God will do it much quicker for those who call on Him day and night.

Application:
Many times I have prayed so long for something that I wonder if God hears me. There is evidence that he does answer my prayers, because some things I have prayed for He has answered. I prayed for my dad to know God for 20 years and God answered it. Sometimes during that time, I wondered if it would ever happen. God tells us to pray and don't give up because He will answer.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, Thank you for answering my prayers. Help me to wait upon you Lord because Your timing is perfect. Help me to not give up and continue in prayer no matter what the circumstance. Thank you for loving and providing everything I need. In Jesus name Amen.

Forgiving Others

Scripture: Luke 17:3-4
Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. and if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

Observation:
Jesus is telling the disciples to forgive people. Even if they repeatedly offend or sin against you. If they say they are sorry, we are to forgive them.

Application:
I don't like admitting this, but I have been known to carry a grudge or two. I get upset or angry about some injustice and then I want to stay angry for awhile. I really wonder why I do that, it doesn't help me, it actually hurts me. Having said that, is it OK to let people walk all over you repeatedly? I don't think so, I can usually tell if someone is being sincere or not, and I don't have to remain in a situation where I am constantly the door mat. When someone offends me, I should let them know about it, in a kind way. When they say they are sorry, I should forgive them, even if it happens again and again. I sin, every single day, and every day I have to ask for forgiveness. My Father in Heaven forgives me every time I sincerely ask him. Since Jesus is my example and He forgives me continually, then I should follow His example and forgive also.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, Thank you for forgiving me. Thank you for loving me and wanting a relationship with me. Help me to follow Your example and forgive others. In Jesus Name Amen.

Good Stewards

Scripture: Luke 16: 14-15
Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

Observation:
The Pharisees don't like Jesus stories because he is talking about them. They have been greedy and wasteful of the money they have. They haven't been managing things properly. They are very irritated and then Jesus tells them that they can justify what they are doing to men but God is the one who sees their hearts.

Application:
This got me thinking about the money that God has given me. Do I spend it wisely or foolishly? I may not have a lot, but what I do have I need to manage properly. When I go to the store, do I buy whatever catches my eye or do I plan for my trip and buy what is needed? I will admit that many times I have spent way more than I should have because I was impulse buying. It was not good then and it's not good now, especially with the cost of goods these days. I could easily go over budget and then we have to cut something because of it. You know what I discovered? God holds me accountable for how I manage the money he has given me. I will have to answer to Him for my spending habits. Now when I am shopping and thinking of purchasing an item, I ask myself- "Would God be happy with what I am about to purchase?" If the answer is no, then it goes right back on the shelf. It's actually a real money saving technique.

Prayer:
Dear Lord help me to manage the funds you have given me. Help me to live with less. Help me to teach my family to be good stewards of all you have entrusted to our care. In Jesus Name Amen.

Showing Favoritism

Scripture: Genesis 37: 4-5
But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him. Now Joseph had a dream, and he told it to his brothers; and they hated him even more.

Observation:
I wonder why Jacob showed his favoritism? Didn't he realize that it would cause jealousy? Maybe he felt the need to show extra special attention toward Joseph because his mother died. Whatever the reason, Joseph was the favorite son and it caused his brothers to not just dislike him but actually hate him. Then to make matters worse he has a couple of dreams where they are all bowing down to him and he just has to run and tell his brothers about it. Well it is not surprising that they hate him even more. I wonder if Joseph wasn't rubbing it in just a little. He surely knew that he was favored and at the time did not fear his brothers.
Jacob has been showing favoritism all along as these children were growing up. Rachel was his favorite wife. He loved her and he loves her children. He was tricked into having Leah for a wife. So this attitude has been carried forward and passed on to the children. Leah knew that Jacob chose and loved Rachel. She knew that she became his wife through deceit. She felt unloved because she wasn't chosen. Leah spent her whole life trying to get Jacob to love her. She thought if she gave him lots of children that he would finally love her. While Jacob may have come to love Leah and her children, I don't think he loved her with the kind of love he had for Rachel and her children.

Application:
Showing favoritism is not a good thing especially if you have more than one child. I think there is a good lesson to learn from this story. Favoritism causes jealousy and hatred to form in the hearts and minds of those who aren't favored. It can also cause the favored ones to be proud, arrogant and boastful. If you want to have good family relationships or any relationship for that matter, do not show favoritism.

Prayer:
Dear Lord please help me to show my children that they are loved equally. Help me to treat them without partiality. Help them see Your love in me. In Jesus name Amen.

Being Humble Before God

Scripture: Luke 14:11
For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

Observation:
I find it interesting that Jesus ate meals with the Pharisees. I have always thought that the Pharisees did not like Jesus company except to find fault with him. Maybe Jesus was using the opportunity to witness to some of them. Jesus is noticing how the guests are behaving at the dinner and tells them a parable about a wedding feast and taking the best place in the house. He ends by saying they should humble themselves and then they will be great.

Application:
The verse I chose triggered my memory of a song that I know called, Humble Thyself in the Sight of Lord. It got me to thinking about prayer and how I approach God. So what does it mean to be humble? The dictionary defines it as not proud or arrogant; modest. I don't consider myself to be a very good prayer person, I pray, but it seems I am missing something. It looks like God decided it was time I learned a lesson on prayer so here it goes...
Whenever I am communicating with God I should be humble. When I approach God in prayer, should I come to him with a list of wants & wishes or demand this or that? No, I should humble myself before God and realize my lowliness before Him. I don't have a right to demand or ask for anything. I should be thankful that He is even hearing me. Whenever I accomplish a task, who should get the glory? God, he gave me the ability to do it. I can't do anything without God's help. He is my creator and I am nothing. I have value only because God believes I am valuable. I am so fortunate that my creator desires to spend time with me and teach me his ways.
Thank You God!

Prayer:
Dear Lord thank you for showing me that I need to learn to be humble in prayer. Please forgive me for approaching you in such a thoughtless way. Thank you Father for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus Name Amen.

Resolving Conflict

Scripture: Genesis 33:4
But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.

Observation:
Jacobs decides to go back to his homeland but is fearful of his brother Esau. He sends gifts before him to appease his brother and is greatly concerned that he may be killed by his brother because of what Jacob did to him. Instead he is shocked to have his brother embrace him and kiss him and he actually cries. This meeting was a very emotional one for Esau and Jacob. Definitely not what Jacob imagined it would be like. His brother tells him he doesn't want his gifts that he has all that he needs. So the gifts didn't change Esau's heart toward Jacob, God, distance and a some years changed Esau's heart toward his brother.

Application:
To be able to resolve all your problems diplomatically and everyone is still happy, that would be a great quality to have. I am kind of like Jacob in this instance- In trying to resolve an issue where I am concerned -I am fearful of being hurt, rejected or even worse hated. A time span can help sometimes with some issues by allowing all persons involved some breathing room and at a later date try to resolve it. I have discovered that sometimes my fears were built up greater than they should have been and I actually had no reason to be fearful.
There are some issues that must be taken care of quickly though and with this I need help. I noticed that Jacob sent his servants before him with gifts and a message of good will toward Esau. In a sense they were kind of like a mediator, someone who can get between the persons who are conflicted and help them work it out. God has been teaching me by allowing me to be a mediator sometimes. I am able to help others in resolving their conflicts but I need to learn how to use the same method when it comes to me personally. This seems to be a good example of how to work out problems.

Prayer:
Dear Lord help me not be fearful in resolving conflicts. Please teach me the skills necessary to bring about a peaceful resolution to any conflicts I may have. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer in Jesus name Amen.

What Goes Around ...Comes Around

Scripture: Genesis 29:25
So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?”

Observation:
Interesting. Jacob serves for seven years for the woman he loves only to be tricked by her father and given her sister instead. I'm sure he realized suddenly how it feels to be deceived. The Bible doesn't mention how Rachael reacted to all of this but I am sure she felt the sting of it as well. I'm not sure how the sisters got along before this but I think their relationship was definitely strained afterwards. Deception seems to be a family trait and it has made it's way back around to Jacob.

Application:
Lying seems to be the first skill that is honed in the art of deception. I remember once I told a big lie, got caught, got my friend in trouble, made her parents angry with me, disappointed my parents and myself, all so I could show all my classmates that I was willing to drink beer. My friend got really drunk and sick. See what damage one lie caused? It wasn't worth it and it took me awhile to regain the trust that they had in me. Deception brings trouble into my life. It hurts people. I don't ever want to be the cause of someones pain and suffering. It also disappoints my Father in Heaven. He made me with the strength of character needed to overcome this sinful act and with his teachings I have learned my lesson well.

Prayer:
Dear Lord thank you for helping me overcome the deceptive tendencies that I had growing up. Thank you for teaching me your ways and help me to live my life accordingly. Help me to always remember "What goes around comes around." In Jesus name Amen.

Learning what's Important

Scripture: Genesis 27:36
And Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”

Observation:
Well I think I would be really mad too. But I will say that Esau wasn't quite honest when he said that Jacob took away his birthright. He gave it away for a bowl of soup! I guess it wasn't that important to him or maybe he thought Jacob was joking. But now he stole his blessing from him and he had the help of his mother. I am unsure if Esau knew that his mother was in on it but if he did know, I am sure this would have upset him greatly and he probably wondered if his mother loved him. I wondered why Rebekkah acted like this, and then I remembered that the Lord told her that the older would serve the younger. So she had inside information that caused her to act in this instance. Jacob was given the birthright so it seems he should be the one to receive the blessing. I also have the impression that Esau had a tendency to do his own things and not really heed the advice of his parents that much. It could be real troubling to have someone in authority over you and your family who made decisions based on their insight instead of God's.

Application:
I need to learn to recognize what is truly valuable in my life and in order to do that I will need God's help. Esau didn't recognize what was of value to him until it was gone. I don't want that happening to me. I want to heed God's advice, walk in His ways, discover His plan for my life and receive all the blessings that he wants to give me.

Prayer:
Dear Lord help me to learn this valuable lesson. So many times I place great importance on things that ultimately mean nothing and then don't recognize what great value the others have. Help me to always seek your council, follow your ways and realize the blessings and the true valuables you have given me. In Jesus name Amen

Considering God

Scripture: Genesis 26:34-35
When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah.

Observation:
It is interesting that Esau's choice of wives grieved his parents. In earlier chapters when talking about marriages they were all arranged by the fathers. It doesn't say that Esau's was arranged.
I wonder if his family tried to lead him toward the right kind of woman and maybe he decided to follow his own choice. If this is the case then following his own choice shows me several things, 1. He dishonored his parents because he knew the custom of the day was that they were to guide in the selection of his wife. 2. He took two wives instead of one which wasn't God's plan.

Application:
There have been times that I have done things that God would not be happy with. Why did I do such things? I think it really comes down to selfishness. I want what I want and at the time didn't consider what God might think about it. You know what happens when I act this way? I get in all kinds of trouble. God is my Father and not considering what he desires for me is not wise. Stepping outside of God's plan even on small stuff is dangerous because Satan will be waiting for me, offering me all kinds of enticing incentives that take me further and further off the path that God has chosen for me. God can get me back on the right track but sometimes the road may be harder because of the choices I made.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, please help me to never wander away from your plan for my life. I love you and desire to live my life for you. Please guide and direct my paths, clear my heart and mind of selfishness and keep it turned toward You. In Jesus name Amen.

Putting God First

Scripture: Luke 9:59-61
Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.”

Observation:
These men who wanted to follow Jesus had other things to do first. Bury the father, say goodbye to family. Sounds like pretty important things to do. But nothing -that includes family is more important than following Jesus.

Application:
How many times have I let things take priority over my time with Jesus? I can't even count them all. But I have learned that I need to get my priorities straight...and God should be first on the list. Without even thinking about it or realizing it, I was breaking the 1st commandment. God gave me everything I have, family, friends, home, jobs, etc... why would I even begin to place these in front of him? Sometimes even the small stuff will take a front seat before God. It could be anything like my television/PC, shopping, school, daily life in general. I believe that Satan enjoys getting me so wrapped up with my life, I won't have the energy to spend time with God. By the end of the day I am tired and while I may have good intentions - falling asleep will not help me have a relationship with God.

Prayer:
Dear Lord help me to get my priorities straightened out. Help me to place you first in my life. Help my family know that You are most important above all else. In Jesus name Amen.

Where is Your Faith?

Scripture: Luke 8:23-25
But as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in jeopardy. And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm. But He said to them, “Where is your faith?”

Observation:
It seems that even the disciples having been with Jesus and seeing what he was capable of, forgot in this time of great distress that he could do anything. He wasn't concerned about the storm at all in fact he was able to sleep through it.

Application:
I have been on a boat in the very choppy Gulf of Mexico and it was pitching and tossing with water coming over the second level deck. I was a child at the time and it was all I could do to hang on and not lose my lunch. Sleeping just didn't seem possible until I got so sick that it was a blessing to pass out and wake up when it was over. Had I know Jesus back then, I am sure I would have been praying and begging for help also. Even to this day, I can get stressed out about the unknowns in life, like job security, finances, flying and wondering if we are going to make it out alive, etc. I have a tendency to start trying to take matters into my own hands and take over. The problem with that is - some things I can't control and it is during those times that I have to fully rely on God and that is when my faith is really tested. Can I trust Him to take care of me and provide for my needs? I may not get exactly what I want, but the Lord knows exactly what I need and he always makes provisions for it.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, Thank you for always looking out for me. Help me to never forget that you will always take care of me and provide the best for me. Teach me Lord to place my trust fully in you and not worry about things out of my control. Thank you for loving me.
In Jesus name Amen.

Godly Character Exposes Sin

Scripture: Genesis 19:9
And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door.

Observation:
Lot is basically trying to appeal to the groups morals and they have none. He even offered his daughters to spare them. They want to kill him because they think he is judging them.

Application:
There have been times I have met people who seem at first to be friendly but the moment we start talking spiritual things everything changes. They don't want to hear it and even if you back off, they still feel like you are pressuring them or judging them even though you have done nothing. I think I know why that is...it is because even though I am not doing anything to them personally, they are watching me now and God's character stands out. If I am living a Christian life then it will expose the flaws of a non Christian life and I don't have to say a word. I must realize though that there will be a point in time at which my witness whether it be vocal or silent will do no more good to the person who is rejecting God and I need to move on.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, help me to be a powerful witness for you. Help me not be afraid to stand firm in my beliefs even in the face of danger. Guide me Lord and help me to know when it is time to move on and if I can't recognize it lead me by the hand just like you did for Lot. In Jesus name, Amen.

Built to Last

Scripture: Luke 6:46-49
“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

Observation:
Jesus is telling me that if I want to have a relationship with Him that I am going to have to build a firm foundation and that will require some work on my part. If I refuse to do the job or do the job right, then all I am doing is setting myself up for failure because my relationship with Him will be to shallow to last.

Application:
Spiritually is my foundation built on the rock -Jesus? When the Lord teaches or shows me some new truth that requires me to make a change am I willing to make it or do I just let it go and act like it was nice to hear but nothing is required of me? If the Lord requires that I make a change then I should be willing to make it, this way I am building a firm foundation. If I ignore and act like it doesn't matter, God still knows it and He knows that I am unwilling, therefore I am building my house without a foundation and my relationship with Him will not last.

Prayer:
Dear Lord help me to always be ready and willing to accept the new light that You show me each day. Help me to make the changes necessary to have a deep and abiding relationship with You. Help me to never become so self absorbed as to think that I have need of nothing. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer, Amen.

Faith In Action

Scripture:
Luke 5:18-20
18 Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst before Jesus. 20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

Observation:
Wow! This man and his friends had great faith. In fact it was so great that they weren't going to let anything stop them from seeing Jesus. They even took extreme measures and tore up someones roof to accomplish their goal.

Application:
Do I have that kind of faith? Hmm...Am I willing to go to extremes to meet Jesus? I hope that when I have the opportunity to show my faith that I will be as bold as these men and not let anything stop me from showing it or sharing it.

Prayer:
Dear Lord help me not be afraid or easily discouraged in showing my faith. Help me to be bold and courageous in sharing the Good News with others. Amen.

Satan's Strategy: Keeping Me Away from God

Scripture: Luke 4:5-8
Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And the devil said to Him, "All this authority I will give you, and their glory; for this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours." And Jesus answered and said to him, "Get behind Me, Satan! For it is written, "You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.

Observation:
Satan plays on weakness. He will look for the perfect opportunity to pounce. He will say anything and do anything to keep me from worshiping God. Of course you can't believe a word he says because he is a liar.

Application:
Satan wants to keep me from worshiping God and will use any means available to make it happen. I must pray and study God's word so that I will recognize when I am under attack. Satan doesn't make the attacks appear appalling instead they are appealing. I must know Jesus better and become more like Him so that I will be able to withstand the attacks that Satan throws at me.

Prayer:
Dear Lord help me to know you better. Place your word in my heart and mind so that I won't fall for Satan's lies and tricks. Amen

After Baptism I became a Minister

Scripture: Luke 3:21-23
When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased." Now Jesus himself began His ministry at about thirty years of age,..

Observation: Jesus was learning up to the point of his baptism and then He began His ministry.

Application: Baptism is not the final act of following Jesus. It is the beginning of my ministry. I must begin sharing Jesus with others and serving just as Jesus did after His baptism. God is well pleased when I decide to follow him and minister to others.

Prayer: Dear Lord, Please help me to be an effective minister so that others may see your love and your spirit in me. Help me to grow and become more like you everyday. Amen.
