Scripture: Genesis 27:36
And Esau said, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has supplanted me these two times. He took away my birthright, and now look, he has taken away my blessing!” And he said, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”
Observation:
Well I think I would be really mad too. But I will say that Esau wasn't quite honest when he said that Jacob took away his birthright. He gave it away for a bowl of soup! I guess it wasn't that important to him or maybe he thought Jacob was joking. But now he stole his blessing from him and he had the help of his mother. I am unsure if Esau knew that his mother was in on it but if he did know, I am sure this would have upset him greatly and he probably wondered if his mother loved him. I wondered why Rebekkah acted like this, and then I remembered that the Lord told her that the older would serve the younger. So she had inside information that caused her to act in this instance. Jacob was given the birthright so it seems he should be the one to receive the blessing. I also have the impression that Esau had a tendency to do his own things and not really heed the advice of his parents that much. It could be real troubling to have someone in authority over you and your family who made decisions based on their insight instead of God's.
Application:
I need to learn to recognize what is truly valuable in my life and in order to do that I will need God's help. Esau didn't recognize what was of value to him until it was gone. I don't want that happening to me. I want to heed God's advice, walk in His ways, discover His plan for my life and receive all the blessings that he wants to give me.
Prayer:
Dear Lord help me to learn this valuable lesson. So many times I place great importance on things that ultimately mean nothing and then don't recognize what great value the others have. Help me to always seek your council, follow your ways and realize the blessings and the true valuables you have given me. In Jesus name Amen
